San Carlos is located 120 km from Hermosillo and 350 km (approximately 4 hours) by car from the border with the United States, in Nogales, on Federal Highway 15.

During vacations, San Carlos is a popular destination for many people due to its coastal area and isolation.

The Tetakawi hill is an emblem of high landscape value for San Carlos, where the Yaqui and Seri Indians survived; besides that its mystical silhouette strengthened the warrior spirit and the soul of the nomadic Indian. According to popular belief, the Tetakawi bears that name because of its peculiar silhouette, which is drawn by the teats of a goat. However, for the Yaqui tribe, this hill is Tákale, 2 which means “split hill”, due to the shape of its point, open, like the tongue of a huge snake. Legend has it that the name of goat’s tits was given to it by a Guaymanse merchant and that in that case the word in the Yaqui language would be Teta Cagui,3 without k or w, which means “stone hill”.
